Aren’t you bored of yourself yet? Shocked, well it really is a reality check question that is needed before any reinvention can happen. You can reinvent yourself just for the fun of it or you can understand that if you are not reinventing yourself you are becoming obsolete day by day. Of the two reasons listed above, I prefer to do it because its fun and the other rewards simply follow! Ok, you are up to it now! Where do we go from here?
It is really tough to figure out what your new direction ought to be. There are many ways you can go about it:
- Follow your passion – many people advise us to follow our passion. It’s great if we really know what our passion is so we can follow it. So if your passion is cooking may be you can make your passion your profession and become a chef!
- Experiment – many a times we just don’t know what our passion is and that’s ok. In that scenario the best approach is to experiment. Find things that excite you, make you happy even if it is for short time. Follow things that intrigue you.
- Improve on weak area – so what if you are not clear of your passion and don’t feel like experimenting then what? Well then you can simply start by identifying areas you feel you are weak in. Just doing that will get you outside your comfort zone and make you more confident.
In the end this is all really about trying. There is no sure shot formula except that I can assure you its fun! Here’s an interesting quote from Baz Luhrmann song: Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)
‘Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don’t.’
All change brings risks and no decision is good or bad in itself. A decision is only bad when one is not willing to deal with the possible consequences of their decision. If you leave your job and open a Fast Food joint, the decision is not bad unless of course you are not ready to deal with both the possibilities of success and failure.
Also, before you jump in, it is very easy nowadays to get a test drive of what your life would be in your new avatar. It is exciting to think of the money you can make as an entrepreneur but the excitement won’t last long once the realities of entrepreneurship set in. So to be prepared about the risks and rewards both, mingle with others who are already doing what you want to do and get a feel for what it could be like. Do you like the feeling? Are you still excited? Pay attention to these aspects and your decision will be easier and with a stronger resolve.
After the initial euphoria of doing new things and when the excitement fades away, fear and rationality take hold. What if it does not work? Be practical? Why leave your well paying job and try a new career? All the ‘what if’s’ paralyze you and dissuades you from acting.
Of course there are risks and scenarios that can occur that are not ideal. At this point, it is important to revisit the core reason (“passion” and “impact”) that excited you in the first place. Secondly, look at your situation objectively and how much risk you can afford to take but don’t underestimate your ability to deal with the situations and improvise. How many times do the worst scenarios we imagine really manifest? Yet, they have such a paralyzing hold on many people.
If you can feel it, you can have it. Yes, it is as simple as that. If you feel the success, if you can visualize the end success like it’s already happening and can see it in its minute details, you are on your way to success.
When you visualize, use all possible aids. You could say how you would feel, you could paint the outcome and you could use pictures. Do whatever it takes to get the feeling of success like it has already has happened and the power of your subconscious mind will surely and silently guide you to it.
If you want to be an entrepreneur join clubs associated with entrepreneurs, meet them, talk to them and learn from them. The best way to make a change in life is to create a good support system. Spend time on peripheral activities; immerse yourself, if nothing else you will learn amazing things just by being around these people. Yes, it’s almost like osmosis.
A strong network of varied and many people is a great resource when you want to run an idea by anybody, get some advice, get introduced to the right person or simply learn a new thing.
Today, the world operates on a ‘Network of Trust’ and you need to be part of it to excel in your new domain.
At the end, to learn swimming one does have to jump in the swimming pool. It is said that man is the only mammal whose offspring are not born with knowledge of how to swim. All the other mammals simply jump in and swim.
Take some basic precautions, have some contingencies, do your research and then jump. The game does not start until then.
In the end re-invention is not about what you can or cannot do. It is about the courage to follow your heart. It is about the love of learning. It is about making mistakes while doing it, learning from the mistakes and keeping on going. Take the jump and I promise the rewards would be much higher than sitting it out besides the pool.
