The client was offering client/server-based systems working in the space of customer relationships. However, the end customers were looking for a SaaS solution to manage all of their CRM activities.
The client was looking at building a solution that would offer all the features offered by the client/server application without a performance drop. This was important to live up the user experience expectation of the end customers.
As the client was not catering to a specific industry, the hosted CRM application needed to be flexible enough to handle anything thrown at it gracefully; be it a new workflow or new segmentation etc.
This was going to be an experiment for the client and hence the willingness to throw all-in was not there. The client was not willing to have the MVP as his research told him that end customers would remain either on client/server or online. So, MVP testing would have been difficult.
After studying the requirements, the team decided to go ahead with Java and MySQL stack as it provided a robust technology foundation with high confidence of scalability and code manageability in the growth phase.
The UX team studied competing online CRM platforms catering to enterprises and matched that with the existing features offered through the existing product of the client. Thus, a product roadmap is development.
The CRM is a data-driven application and backend play an important role in the success of the product. So, the focus was on building a robust backend which is robust enough to handle all the inflow of data and flexible enough to be able to extend for accommodating additional features as per the future need.
Special care was taken to craft the UI of the application. The challenge was to offer a modern look without adding an additional learning curve as the end customers were accustomed to the client/server look of the applications offered by the client.
The hosted version of the CRM was written in Java which not only consolidated the existing product portfolio offering but also took care of the features offered by the competing solutions. While doing this the development team has to account for bandwidth constraints of the web application as the client couldn’t afford performance drop even after moving from local to a hosted solution. Everything needed to be highly optimized.
The new hosted CRM solution helped the client in establishing himself as a formidable player in the CRM industry.
As compared to client/server application managing the product rollout was much easier for the client team. End customers also benefited from always updated CRM software.
After the release of the hosted CRM solution, it quickly became the go-to application for all customer related activities and freed up the end customers to access it from anywhere easily.
