## Key challenges
The client partnered with e-Zest for the design and development of data visualization tool that will enable its customers to understand deeper insights about their customers.
#### Information-packed dashboard
The client was looking to show important information to their customers on the dashboard itself. However, it was expected to be presented in uncluttered and easy to understand format.
#### Lightweight yet rich in UI graphical components
Good looking UI was going to be the USP of this solution hence no compromise to be made on the aesthetics of the solution. Yet, the graphical components and libraries shouldn’t have posed a challenge on the performance of the solution.
#### Multiple data sources
The client was servicing various organizations having their own technology stacks and infrastructure. This meant that data would come in different forms and through different directions. Combining all of that data to a single standard for processing was a big challenge.
#### Handling various lines of business through this single solution
The client offers various services to its customers such as payments and liquidity management, cash management, financial messaging, financial supply chain through electronic invoice presentment and trade services, merchant services such as credit card gateways and mobile banking. All of these was expected to be part of the same solution.
#### No proprietary tools
The client was very specific that no proprietary tools to be used in this solution. This left team with the only option of using open source tools and technologies for building data visualization solution.
## Approach
Based on the client’s input of using open source technologies, rich-interfaces and lightweight components for data visualization, the architecting team came up with the technology stack considering the natural fitment, interoperability, and scalability of the solution.
## Solution
#### UX engineering to understand the behavior
- UX team worked on an understanding of the financial domain and the user behavior while preparing visual and graphical charts that fit the industry standards and the users
- UX team addressed the challenge of simplifying huge amounts of data and making the data visualization tool simple for the users to extract meaning
#### Advanced data filtering and slicing
- For a deeper understanding of the data, the advanced data filtering features were provided with good data visualizations and the data trends
- Creation of slice and dice feature on the dashboards: Using the unique feature of the creation of slice and dice, users can view the information in a graph on the dashboard menu which is highly useful for quick data visualization
#### Using D3.js for visualization and Elasticsearch for search
- The architecting team found D3.JS (or just D3 for Data-Driven Documents) fit for the purpose. It is a JavaScript library for producing dynamic and interactive data visualizations in web browsers. It effectively makes use of the widely implemented SVG, HTML5, and CSS standards
- Elasticsearch is a distributed, scalable, and highly available solution. It provides real-time search and analytics capabilities and sophisticated RESTful API
## End result
The data visualization tool with good filtering and interactive charting features was highly useful and liked by the client as it improved their customer satisfaction.
#### Sighting unknown insights
Client’s customers were able to make better use of its existing data. They could view the business data frequently using multiple filters and gain valuable insights.
#### Built a USP
The data visualization capability along with rich-interface and advanced filtering made a name for the client in the industry. As it came as a part of the existing suite, the customers didn’t have to buy it separately from the client.
