Liferay portal is a free and open source enterprise portal written in Java and distributed under the GNU Lesser General Public License. Its primary usage is to power corporate intranets and extranets. Liferay portal allows users to set up features common to websites. Portlets is the name ascribed to its functional units. Liferay can also be termed a content management framework or a web application framework. Liferay’s support for plugins extends into multiple programming languages, including support for PHP and Ruby portlets. The developers are provided a sophisticated programming interface but no programming skills are required for the basic website installation and administration. The Liferay portal is Java based and runs on any computing platform capable of running the Java runtime environment and an application server. Liferay is available with an application server such as Apache Tomcat. Liferay portal is a JSR – 286 enterprise portal including a suite of applications. It is distributed in two different editions namely – Liferay Portal Community Edition and Liferay Portal Enterprise Edition. It also provides a collaboration suite based on the Liferay platform named – Liferay social office comprising a social collaboration suite for enterprises.
